Standard
search patterns
Standard
search patterns are pointers to the best sources available to answer
particular types of enquiry.
They will save you time in writing down reference sources, and act
as a reminder of the sources available.
They do not represent the definitive list of sources available. You
should check other sources as appropriate.
If you use a standard search pattern sheet it does not mean that you
need to check every source on it for every enquiry of this type.
These standard search patterns have been produced by Wessex Drug &
Medicines Information Centre (Southampton). We’ve put them on
the QA section of the UKMI website as an example of good practice.
They are based on the sources we have available to us here, so you
may need to tailor them to your centre.
We find them particularly useful for training and for making sure
we don’t forget to check all relevant sources.
If you use an electronic paperless database you can copy them into
the answer field of your enquiry but you may need to convert the table
into text only so that the system accepts it.
