Working with files from the net
[Back]

Opening Office files (word, excel, access)
Most files or links automatically open their respective program. For instance if we click on a Microsoft Word document and automatically Word begins loading the document. In most cases this should happen unless the computer doesn't have the associated program installed on it, in which case you can save it and transfer it to another computer to read later.

Saving Files from a Webpage
There are many ways to save pictures, text and files (i.e. Documents, animation) from a web page and once you get the hang of it it's really easy but why would you want to? Well you might want to use the text in a report your compiling, or maybe a picture you've seen would be ideal for the presentation you've got planned. Of course you may just like the picture and want to keep it for yourself, the reasons are many.

Saving Text
The images below illustrate how to cut text from a webpage and paste it into another program, in this case notepad.

  1. Find the information you need on a website

  2. Select & Highlight. Hold the left mouse button down and drag.

  3. Copy. Once you've selected the text click the right mouse button and a menu will appear, select copy.

  4. Paste. change over to notepad and right click again in the document window, this time choose paste.

Saving Pictures and files
Saving a picture or a file from a webpage isn't difficult once you know how to do it. 'Hover' over the aforementioned file with your cursor and click the right mouse button. The menu appears once again, as you can see in the picture below.

When this menu appears simply select the 'Save Picture As...' instruction and choose where you want to save it.

You can see here on the left outlined in red the save picture instruction.

Select an option and there you have it.

Nearly the same set of instructions apply to saving a file off the Internet onto your computer. This could be a Word file, Powerpoint, Zip or animation. It doesn't matter what it is, the procedures for downloading it are the same

When this menu appears simply select the 'Save Target As...' instruction and choose where you want to save it.

You can see here on the left outlined in red the save Target instruction.

Select an option and you've done it.

Saving whole Webpages
Probably the easiest thing to do is to save a webpage. Once the page you need is open go to the file menu and select the save as function. This will save the webpage where you want it stored, but it will also create a folder containing the images on the page. To open the webpage simply double click on the icon for the page. It's important that if you move the Website icon you also move the webpage folder with it as it won't open correctly without it.
NOTE: Some webpages will not save properly and some will not save at all but these will mainly be secure pages which hold personal information.
